The second book in an Air Awakens prequel trilogy about the Golden Guard.

The Empire has declared war against its neighbor to the north, the country of Shaldan. Prince Baldair is summoned to lead, but the untested royal harbors secret reservations about his ability to inspire confidence in troops his senior in both age and experience. The memory of his first kills the summer prior still weigh heavy on his shoulders, and he flees to his friend Erion’s home near the Crossroads to wait for the army before marching north.

Raylynn Westind had never held a responsibility in her life. After losing her mother years ago, she wanders from town to town in search of a challenge, honoring the sacred song of the sword her mother taught her. She never backs down from a fight, not when her opponents are the deadly Knights of Jadar, mysteriously insistent upon her death. And certainly not when the opponent is the Empire’s young playboy prince.

Baldair has never met another person as gifted with the sword as he, and is insistent on seeing a golden bracer grace Raylynn’s forearm. But the woman lives a mercenary’s life, and Baldair quickly learns that her loyalty comes at a high price. When he discovers the bounty on her head, the prince must choose between his responsibilities to his father’s Empire, and the woman who has captured his heart as a soldier, and as a man.

The Prince Rogue Golden Guard Trilogy Elise Kova Books

I enjoyed this latest installment in the Golden Guard series and the further development of Baldair's character and, of course, the first real introduction we have to Raylynn's character. I thought it was well woven into the rest of the GG series as well as the Air Awakens series and (as a fan of both) I finished it in a day (I had to work or it would have been faster...), so there you go.

I particularly enjoyed Baldair getting to know a secretive person like Raylynn and how this was a foil for Vhalla getting to know Aldrick and drawing comparisons between the two. I would have enjoyed knowing Raylynn's POV of some of the Air Awakens events now knowing her back story.

One caveat though (not taking off a star for this because this comment is for the editors, not the author): one uses "reins" for horses, not "reigns". That error popped up several times. Yikes!

The Prince Rogue Golden Guard Trilogy Elise Kova Books Reviews

This adds much to the pervious series. It has been a fun read. It gives food for thought with male female relationships. Can't wait for the next one.
I love these books. The backstory of Baldair and Raylynn was fun to read. When I read the Air Awakens series, their chemistry was something that I wanted to know more about.
I can't say much without spoiling the series this prequel series is based on but this book served as a lovely character study. I enjoyed every tear filled second. I hope after this prequel that Kova does more in this world with the mythos she has built.
The book keeps a steady pace and gives very nice insight into Baldair, Raylan, and even Aldrik. It adds more ties to the Air Awaken Series and helps bring better meaning behind the characters and action in that series. It was fun to see Baldair and Raylan form because that is not covered much at all in the AA Series. Can't wait for the last installment to tie this series to the Air Awakens series!
So many emotions reading this book! I was very excited to read the backstory of Raylynn and of dear, dear Baldair.
While you can read this before the Air Awakens series, if you have read that first you'll appreciate more some easter eggs that appear in this story if you notice them or also mentions of other characters, that to me was pretty special and definitely brought more feels to my reading experience.
I'm so glad Elise is writing this stories, so much to explore!
I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It was fun, quick, action-packed, and romantic. The only drawbacks for me are that the beginning felt a little forced (though believable considering Baldair's proclivity for skirt-chasing) and some of their interactions felt a bit scripted. The ending was great and breathtaking even though this was a prequel. Knowing certain characters survive because they appear in Air Awakens did not rob the story of its drama, it jus morphed it from "Are they going to get through this?" to "How will they get through this?" Good book. Enjoyed it. Just didn't love it.
Woohoot!!! This next installment in the Golden Guard prequel trilogy is even better than the first. In this one we get a glimpse of Baldair's relationship with Raylynn and what a great read it is.

I loved how Elise allows us to watch Baldair grow in a way different than the first book in this series. In that installment, Baldair is young and impulsive. In this one, we get to see him mature in his relationship with a woman. The story keeps speaking to how he would normally have spoken, but Raylynn helps him develop a skill of listening and watching before acting. That said, he is still a man of action and his fascination with Raylynn's sword skills provides a fitting push for events to unfold.

All in all a very good read. I can't wait for the last one.
